Under the guidance of professional bowyer Ted Fry, handcraft a bow from a wood stave. No prior bow making experience necessary; instruction and stave difficulty will be tailored to your skill level. Your class fee includes instruction, the cost of a rough wood stave, the use of our workshop's bow building tools, and a bowstring (additional materials available).
We'll discuss the type of bow you'd like to make, help you select a white wood (hickory or dogwood), and then provide instruction for tillering the stave into a bow you can be proud of. Throughout the process, you'll follow the grain of the wood to bring out each bow's unique and individual natural character, ensuring that you have a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. We'll work with you to train the wood and refine your bow to your own draw length and weight. You'll have several opportunities to shoot your bow and, by the end of this course, you'll take home your own working self-made bow.
Visit our workshop in Hood River or gather a group of 8 to 10 and we'll come to you. Our workshop features the comfortable camaraderie of other archers and museum-like history hung on the walls of our shop. If you're not sure what you what you want to build, take a look around and find inspiration in other bows. It's a friendly, no-pressure, learning environment to work at your own pace.
Take as much time as you need to craft your bow, but typically expect two working days.
